Dale R. Preston
Freelance Photographer since 2002
I aim to create images that capture joy, show people at their best, convey the feeling of what was going on, and are beautiful to behold.
I am especially well known for taking wonderful candid portraits of people during events
. I regularly photograph people unobtrusively while they are busy celebrating, performing, speaking, dancing, getting married, relaxing with friends, etc.
Of course it is enjoyable to have cooperative subjects who will pose for the camera, but commonly I am capturing people and events as they are happening
, in the existing light and location. The results are often more genuine, natural, and meaningful.
My approach requires a keen eye, excellent timing and being skillful with composition, light and color. It also requires being good with people!
My personality and style is friendly, professional, organized, easy-going, and efficient. My goal is to understand what kind of images you
desire, make sure you
are comfortable and at ease, and then create truly memorable photographs at reasonable prices
I use top-of-the-line Olympus cameras and also have a full range of portable studio lights and other equipment when needed. I work on location, indoors or out. I do not have a commercial studio space.
I take pride in my work. If you're not fully satisfied, I won't accept your payment. That said, all of my clients have been well pleased with the resulting images and my style. I expect you will be too!
Thank you for the opportunity to showcase you at your best,
- Dale Preston

Photography gives us a special handle on the world: a means to contemplate, interpret, and enjoy what are often fleeting moments around us. Photography also allows us to communicate with one another, across boundaries, sharing perspectives and thoughts in a nonverbal, powerful manner.
I took up my first camera as a teenager in 1977. Self-taught, my original photography interests focused on nature, exploring the beautiful, diverse animals, plants, and ecosystems with which we share this planet.
Over the last ten years I have especially enjoyed portraying the people, places and events in Oberlin, Ohio. Since 2002, I have worked on numerous photography projects for a wide variety of clients – including over twenty nonprofit organizations – to showcase and celebrate what makes this community so special.
My images have appeared in numerous publications, magazines, annual reports, brochures and websites; at local art galleries and public spaces; and of course in the homes of many clients, friends and families.
